The court painter Elisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun’s career
spanned a tumultuous time in French history – from the reign of Louis XV to
that of Louis-Philippe. Her most famous painting is the large-scale portrait of
a demure-looking Queen Marie-Antoinette with her children, commissioned in an
attempt to improve the queen’s disastrous public image. Vigée Le Brun was the
first woman artist to achieve widespread international recognition, and yet,
surprisingly, this is the first time an exhibition has been devoted to her in
France ...
