“Know how to make coffee?”
A young man is standing in the vast painter's studio, a deconsecrated baroque church, which gives on to the courtyard at Piazza Grillo in Rome. The aspiring artist has been sent by his mother to this contemporary master in order to have his judgment as to whether or not her son should enrol in the Liceo Artistico, the hight school of fine arts, instead of foregoing his ambition to serve the Muses (just as Igor Stravinsky's fatehr had secretly shown his son's compositions to an expert to get a second opinion...)
“There's coffee pot over there. Make some coffee.” The painter drank a cup of coffee and finally looked up at the boy. Then he set the empty cup down next to a pencil and a sheet of paper.
“Now draw it.”
After the drawing of the coffee cup was completed, the artist examined it in silence. Then he said:
“You can sign up for the Liceo Artistico tomorrow”.
The maestro was none other than Renato Guttuso, leading exponent of italian social realism of the day, and the aspiring art student was Gianfranco Farioli....

....The creative of Gianfranco Farioli resembles a palindrome, readable backwards and forwards a sojourn in fast forward, an equilibrium or balancing act, a pendulum of predilections ying-yang, plus-minus, micro to macro, black on white, the simultaneous translation from object to image, between the highly subjective personal to the anonymously objective, from north to south, Milan to Rome, and above all the acrobatic ease of passing from architectural pace to the pictorial dimension....

Accade –qualche volta, non sempre – che anche un pittore, un architetto,
un musicista abbiano uno loro “stile letterario“ .

“Sai fare il caffé?”
Un giovane uomo è in piedi nell’ampio studio del pittore, una chiesa barocca sconsacrata, che si affaccia sul cortile di Palazzo del Grillo a Roma. E’ stata la madre dell’aspirante artista a mandarlo da questo maestro contemporaneo, per sapere da lui se suo figlio si possa iscrivere al liceo artistico, o debba invece rinunziare alla sua ambizione di servire le Muse (così come aveva fatto il padre di Igor Stravinsky, che aveva mostrato, in segreto, le composizioni del figlio a un esperto, per avere un secondo parere...).
“C’è la caffettiera laggiù. Fai il caffé”. Il pittore bevve una tazza di caffé e finalmente rivolse lo sguardo al ragazzo. Poi posò la tazza vuota accanto a una matita e a un foglio di carta.
“Ora disegnala”.
Dopo che il disegno della tazza di caffé fu finito, l’artista lo esaminò in silenzio. Poi disse: “Ti puoi iscrivere al liceo artistico domani”.
Il maestro non era altri se non Renato Guttuso, massimo esponente del realismo sociale italiano dell’epoca; l’aspirante allievo di belle arti era Gianfranco Farioli...

...La creatività di Gianfranco Farioli ricorda un palindromo, leggibile all’indietro e in avanti, una pausa nell’avanzamento rapido, un punto di equilibrio, un pendolo tra ying e yang, tra più e meno, tra micro e macro, tra bianco e nero, la simultanea traslazione dall’oggetto all’immagine, dal personale, marcatamente soggettivo all’anonimo oggettivo, dal nord al sud, da Milano a Roma, e soprattutto l’agio acrobatico nel volgere dal passo architettonico alla dimensione pittorica...

...Le fonti originarie dei “testi” di Gianfranco Farioli sono le agende o i diari che ha conservato per anni, scritti come esercizio liberatorio, il cui contenuto è volutamente nascosto agli occhi del pubblico...
